Washington State's "Monster Weekend" road closures impact key routes

Transportation officials in Washington State are preparing for the "Monster Weekend" with major road closures. These will be some of the biggest construction shutdowns of the year, impacting several key travel routes in the Seattle area from late Friday, September 27, through early Monday, September 30.

The details: The closures will affect State Route 520, I-405, SR 167, and I-5.

  • SR 520: Closed from I-5 in Seattle to 92nd Avenue Northeast in Clyde Hill. Both the highway and the SR 520 Trail for bicyclists and pedestrians will shut down from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. This is part of the Montlake Project.
  • Northbound I-405: Shut from Sunset Boulevard Northeast to Coal Creek Parkway Southeast from 11 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday. Traffic will shift onto a new bridge.
  • Southbound SR 167: Closed in Kent from SR 516 to South 277th Street, beginning at 11:59 p.m. Friday till 4 a.m. Monday. Crews will do paving and striping work.
  • I-5: Overnight closures between SR 18 in Federal Way and 54th Avenue East in Fife on Friday and Saturday nights. Lanes start reopening at 7 a.m. on Saturday and at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Why it matters: The closures will create significant disruptions. Travelers should avoid peak hours or postpone non-essential trips.

What to do: Detour routes will be in place, but they can't handle normal traffic volumes. Consider using other regional routes.

The SR 520 closure is to install permanent pavement and utilities, and perform system testing, according to WSDOT.

All lanes will reopen by Monday morning at 5 a.m.
