Truck driver charged with intoxication manslaughter after crash in Texas

A truck driver has been charged with intoxication manslaughter after a tragic crash occurred in a construction zone in Fort Worth, Texas on early Thursday morning.

What happened: The incident took place around 1:30 a.m. on West Loop 820 at White Settlement Road. Guadalupe Velasquez Cruz, the driver of the semi, failed to stop and collided with a car that was halted due to construction traffic.

  • The female driver of the car was killed in the crash.
  • A 41-year-old male passenger in the same car was seriously injured.
  • A third vehicle was also involved but its occupants were not hurt.

Details: Fort Worth Police conducted field sobriety tests and took a blood sample from Cruz, which confirmed he was intoxicated. He has been arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter, according to Fox 4 News.

Statement: "It’s bad enough when a DWI occurs, but we’re talking a semi-truck with a driver that’s responsible for a very powerful machine that can cause death — which it actually did," Fort Worth Police Officer Brad Perez said.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek further details regarding Cruz's state at the time of the crash. All lanes of West Loop 820 South Freeway were closed for the investigation but have since reopened.
