Truck driver charged with intoxication manslaughter in Texas crash

A semi-truck driver has been charged with intoxication manslaughter after a deadly crash in Fort Worth, Texas.

What happened: The incident took place early Thursday on West Loop 820 at White Settlement Road. Traffic was stopped due to construction, and the semi did not halt in time, colliding with the vehicle ahead.

  • The crash resulted in the death of a woman driving the car that was hit. Her passenger, a 41-year-old man, was severely injured.
  • A third vehicle was also struck in the crash, but its occupants were not hurt.

Fort Worth Police arrested 24-year-old Guadalupe Velasquez Cruz at the scene. After performing field sobriety tests and taking a blood sample, officers confirmed he was intoxicated, according to Fox 4 News.

The big picture: The construction zone had compressed traffic into a single lane, causing congestion even at that hour. Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Cruz remains in custody, facing charges that could lead to heavy penalties. The investigation is ongoing, and the road conditions at the crash site were also being examined as part of the inquiry.
