A truck driver has been charged with intoxication manslaughter after a tragic crash in a Fort Worth construction zone early Thursday morning.
The incident: Around 1:30 a.m., Guadalupe Velasquez Cruz, 24, failed to stop in a construction zone on West Loop 820 and collided with a stopped car.
- The woman driving the car did not survive.
- Her passenger, a 41-year-old man, was seriously injured.
- A third vehicle was involved, but no one inside was hurt.
What we know: Fort Worth Police Officer Brad Perez said, "traffic was at a stop" due to construction being compressed to one lane. Velasquez Cruz was found to be intoxicated after field sobriety tests and a blood sample.
He is now facing charges of intoxication manslaughter. "We’re talking a semi-truck with a driver that’s responsible for a very powerful machine that can cause death—which it actually did," Perez stated according to FOX 4 News.
The aftermath: All lanes of W. Loop 820 South Freeway were closed for the investigation. The incident highlights the dangers of driving under the influence, especially for commercial truck drivers.
Thankfully, no one in the third vehicle was injured.
