Rebuilding work on the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore is set to start this month after nearly a year of planning.
The incident: The bridge collapsed on March 26, 2024, when a large cargo ship crashed into it, sending a part of the structure into the Patapsco River.
- Underwater surveys by work crews are scheduled to begin on January 7, 2025.
- The demolition of the remaining parts of the bridge is expected to take place this spring.
The costs: The overall project will cost $1.7 billion, funded entirely by the federal government after Maryland's intense lobbying efforts.
- "This bipartisan agreement is a win for port workers, truckers, small businesses, service members, and working families," said Maryland Governor Wes Moore, affirming the national importance of the bridge rebuild.
The Key Bridge is not only vital to Maryland but essential for truckers and businesses across the nation, according to The Washington Post.
Full reconstruction of the bridge is projected to take several years to complete.
