Arizona drivers might soon face hefty fines for slow driving in the fast lane if a new bill, introduced by State Rep. Teresa Martinez, becomes law. The proposal targets drivers on two-lane interstates who dawdle in the left lane, imposing a $500 fine.
Driving change: The "Slow Poke" bill is aimed at eliminating traffic backups and reducing accidents. Rep. Martinez noted, "You've got 5, 7, 10, 15 cars backed up…they’re getting frustrated. Then they pass on the right, speeding… that’s when you get accidents," reported ABC15 News.
How it works: If passed, large signs will warn drivers with messages like "LEFT LANE FOR PASSING ONLY" alongside a "$500 FINE" reminder.
- The law would apply to I-8, I-10, and I-40 but not I-17.
- Current law prohibits slow left-lane driving, but this bill aims to enforce it more strictly.
Local voices: At a rest stop on I-10, opinions varied. Some drivers see the bill as a solution, while others question its fairness.
After clearing committee, the bill now moves to the House for further consideration. The expansion of I-10, key to some of these issues, continues with an expected completion date in 2028.
