Icy Alabama roads challenge truckers during winter storm

Alabama roads were coated in snow and ice starting January 9, 2025, causing hazardous travel conditions across much of the state. Authorities advise drivers to limit travel to essential trips only.

The situation: Overnight snow has led to icy roads, creating risky driving conditions in central and northern Alabama. Officials stress every bridge and road should be considered potentially impassable.

  • Interstate 20 is being treated from the Georgia state line to the Logan Martin Bridge.
  • County roads in places like Childersburg and Calhoun are closed due to slick conditions.
  • All roads in Pickens, Etowah, and Cherokee counties are becoming increasingly treacherous.

What authorities are saying: "If I was a driver, I'd consider every bridge impassable," warned Jim Coker, Jefferson County EMA Director, underlining the threats posed by the current weather.

Current road conditions: Snow continues to blanket roads, with many areas reporting accidents and stranded vehicles. The westbound lanes of I-20 have been cleared for traffic in some areas, reported AL News.

State transportation crews are actively working to manage road safety, focusing on high-traffic interstates and critical highways.
