Colorado to Stop Accepting Cash for Truck Permits in 2025

The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) will stop accepting cash for commercial vehicle permits starting January 1, 2025.

What's happening: Drivers will need to use credit cards or checks instead of cash at all Colorado Ports of Entry.

Why it matters: The CSP says the change is for security reasons. They noted that most transactions at these ports are already made with credit cards.

  • The move aims to reduce the risk of theft at these stations.
  • A trucker’s wife mentioned that frequent robberies at these stations could be the reason for this transition.

Yes, but: Many are raising concerns over the added fees credit card transactions might bring. "Is the CSP covering the 2-4% credit card fee? Or will there not be a change?" asked one Facebook user.

One social media user found it "awkward that the government won’t take its own currency that it made." Another commented, "They have to accept cash. It’s printed on the money 'this note is legal tender for all debts public and private.'"

Despite this shift, the CSP emphasized that most drivers already use cards, making the transition smoother according to an announcement by KDVR.

Ultimately, drivers will need to prepare for this change to avoid any inconveniences at Colorado's Ports of Entry come 2025.
