Deputy's vehicle drifts, causing tragic semi-truck collision

A Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputy was killed in a crash with a semi-truck on U.S. Highway 301 in Thonotosassa, Florida. The collision happened around 7:45 a.m. on September 19 when Deputy Darell Brown's vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic "for unknown reasons."

The details: Brown, driving a Ford F-150, collided head-on with a flatbed semi driven by a trucker who "did everything he could" to avoid the crash, according to Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister.

  • The impact pushed Brown's pickup about 100 yards and caused the semi to jackknife.
  • Brown was killed instantly.
  • The truck driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Brown was a nearly 10-year veteran of the sheriff's office, working at the Orient Road Jail. He was married with a blended family of five children, ranging in age from 20 to 5, mentioned Sheriff Chronister.

All lanes of U.S. 301 were closed for several hours for the cleanup but have since reopened, as reported by WTSP News.
