A truck driver has been charged with intoxication manslaughter following a deadly crash on West Loop 820 in Fort Worth, Texas. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, involving a semi-truck and multiple vehicles in a construction zone.
The details: The crash happened while traffic was stopped in a single lane due to construction. The semi-truck, driven by 24-year-old Guadalupe Velasquez Cruz, didn't stop and collided with the vehicle in front of it, driven by a woman who unfortunately died.
- Her 41-year-old male passenger was seriously injured and taken to the hospital.
- Another vehicle was also involved in the chain reaction but its occupants were not injured.
The charges: Fort Worth Police Officer Brad Perez stated there were indications that Cruz was intoxicated. DWI officers conducted field sobriety tests and took a blood sample, which confirmed he was under the influence. Cruz has been charged with intoxication manslaughter.
"It's bad enough when a DWI occurs, but in this case, we’re talking about a semi-truck, a powerful machine that can cause significant damage, which it tragically did," said Perez. "Why was this person intoxicated? Why were they driving a semi-truck in that state?" reported FOX 4 News
The investigation is ongoing as officials seek more answers about Cruz's actions leading up to the crash.
