A truck driver was stopped by Wyoming Highway Patrol on September 13, 2025, as he tried to enter the Green River Tunnel with an oversized load that did not have proper permits.
How it happened: Troopers got a tip from the Evanston Port of Entry about a truck hauling an oversized load that bypassed the port and stayed on the interstate. A Commercial Carrier Trooper waited near the tunnel and intercepted the rig before it could go through.
- The driver did not have the required oversize load permits for Wyoming.
- He was also cited for skipping the Port of Entry and for ignoring road closed signs.
- Total fines added up to more than $800.
- Troopers issued permits and directed the driver to a detour at exit 83 so he could continue his trip legally.
The bigger picture: Wyoming Highway Patrol says several oversized loads have recently tried to enter the I-80 Green River Tunnel without permission, causing problems in the area. In February 2025, a major pileup in the tunnel caused deaths and brought stricter action on oversize loads around Green River.
According to the Highway Patrol, no oversize loads are allowed through the Green River Tunnel or in town. All drivers need to follow permit routes and get clearance before coming into Wyoming.
