A bill was just brought up in the Senate that would make rideshare drivers follow the same English standards as CDL drivers.
Driving the news: Senator Tommy Tuberville introduced the Understanding Basic English Requirements (UBER) Act on November 6, 2025. It says rideshare drivers should be able to read and speak English if they want to work, especially for companies that get government money.
- If the bill passes, rideshare platforms could lose federal contracts for five years if their drivers can't speak or read English well enough.
- Drivers would need to handle talking with the public, understand traffic signs, respond to law enforcement, and fill out reports—all in English.
- The same English requirement is already in place for CDL holders hauling freight across America.
What they're saying: "If you want to live and work in the United States, you need to be able to speak and read our language," Tuberville said while pushing for the change.
Before this, Tuberville asked for CDL testing to be English-only too. The bill is now in the Senate and being looked at by lawmakers.
