WSDOT launches speed camera trial, no fines for drivers yet

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) kicked off a new speed camera pilot program on April 10, 2025.

The big picture: Cameras are tracking speed and license plates on I-90 near Liberty Lake and on I-5 in Skagit County, but there won’t be fines issued for now.

  • Registered owners of speeding vehicles get mailed notices with their speed. No impact on driving records, and no reports to insurance.
  • The program is part of a $1 million project to make roads safer and reduce collisions.

What they're saying: WSDOT says this effort is to "change driver behavior" and save lives.

What's next: The pilot runs until June 2025. Afterward, WSDOT will review the results and report to the state Legislature.
