Virginia is ramping up efforts to improve trucker safety and traffic flow on Interstate 81 with a $64 million project.
What's happening: The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has approved the construction of new truck-climbing lanes on I-81. This will take place in Augusta and Rockingham counties, enhancing the ability for trucks to navigate the steep grades near Weyers Cave.
- The project involves adding lanes in both northbound and southbound directions between mile markers 234.1 and 237.9.
- VDOT plans to start construction in early 2025.
The impact: These truck-climbing lanes are expected to ease congestion and boost safety for everyone on the road. By letting slower trucks have their own lanes, other vehicles can maintain a smoother flow of traffic.
- Additional improvements include lengthening of the off-ramps and on-ramp at the I-81 and Weyers Cave Road interchange (Exit 235).
VDOT's Dave Covington noted, "The I-81 corridor has some steep grades that make it a challenge for commercial trucks to maintain interstate speed."
Looking ahead: With this project greenlit, the changes should help truckers do their jobs more efficiently and safely along this busy route.
