Tanker truck fire prompts evacuations at Texas oil site

Fire crews in Brazos County, Texas, rushed to an oil site near Kurten on Monday, July 7, after a tanker truck caught fire just after 8:30 p.m.

The details: The fire happened on the 12600 block of Copperhead Road, close to homes and other businesses.

  • Thick black smoke and flames were seen from a distance.
  • Firefighters from several departments, including a hazardous materials team, came out to fight the blaze.
  • An evacuation order went out for people living within a half-mile. That order has since been dropped and residents have been allowed to return.

What we know: At least one worker at the facility suffered burn injuries and was flown out by medical helicopter. Their condition has not been shared yet, according to KBTX.

Firefighters now have the situation under control, but cleanup and the investigation into what sparked the fire are still ongoing.
