Two people lost their lives in a fiery crash Tuesday, July 1, on I-96 westbound in Ionia County, Michigan.
What happened: The accident took place around 3:14 p.m. A semi truck was stopped due to heavy traffic in a construction zone merge. A pickup truck pulled up behind the semi. Moments later, a box truck approached and couldn’t stop, slamming into the back of the pickup and pushing it forward into the stopped trailer.
- The impact left the box truck nearly on top of the pickup.
- Both the pickup and box truck caught fire, trapping both drivers inside.
- First responders said both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The semi truck driver was not hurt.
The cause: The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office says there was a lot of traffic leading into the construction zone. Drivers were not keeping enough space between vehicles, according to WZZM13.
Westbound I-96 was closed for about seven hours and reopened by 10:20 p.m. that night.
