Truckers granted rule waiver for storm relief in New York

Truckers carrying road salt in New York have been granted a temporary reprieve from the usual driving rules due to a major winter storm. This measure aims to ensure safe conditions as temperatures dip and roads freeze.

What's going on: Governor Kathy Hochul issued an order on Sunday, February 16, waiving Hours of Service restrictions for these critical deliveries. The storm is expected to bring snow, ice, and fierce winds through Monday night.

  • Road conditions are precarious with snowfall turning into freezing rain and sleet, possibly leading to black ice.
  • Restrictions have also been applied on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge due to the severe weather.

Weather forecast: Gusts could reach 65 MPH creating potential for power outages and hazardous driving. More snow is expected, especially near Lake Ontario, which could result in blizzard-like conditions, reported Governor Kathy Hochul.

State response: New York has mobilized over 6,600 utility workers to handle any power disruptions. The State Department of Transportation has deployed resources to keep roads clear and assist affected areas.

Important to know: Empty tractor-trailers and tandem trucks are banned from certain MTA roads due to expected high winds. This order will remain in effect until further notice.

Hopefully, these efforts will help keep everyone safe on the roads during this stormy period. The commitment to ensure clear highways highlights the essential role truckers play in maintaining the flow of supplies and safety on the roads.
