A deadly crash happened on October 15th along US Highway 20 near Portage, Indiana. A semi truck, driven by 41-year-old Borko Stankovic, swerved to avoid a van that was turning, then hit a Subaru head-on and jackknifed into the van. The crash killed Jeffrey Eberly, 54, who was driving the Subaru.
The details:
- Police say Stankovic didn’t have a valid CDL. He was using a suspended one that belonged to a family member.
- Stankovic is not a U.S. citizen. Officials found his visa expired in 2011 and he has been in the country illegally since then.
- He owned two trucking companies, each with just one employee. These companies, Eclipse Trucking Inc. and ESD Team Inc., got a combined $36,000 in forgiven COVID Paycheck Protection Program loans.
Stankovic was arrested for reckless homicide and criminal recklessness. Immigration officials have put a hold on him at the Porter County Jail.
The Portage Police Department and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement are both involved in the case, reported Fox News.
Stankovic’s next steps in court are still pending at this time.
