The truck driver accused of running over and killing Santaquin Police Sgt. Bill Hooser during a traffic stop on May 5, 2024, is asking for a change in his legal team.
The latest: Michael Aaron Jayne, 43, from Indiana, made a virtual court appearance from jail on Wednesday, June 4. He told the judge he has concerns about his defense and wants a different attorney. “My life is at stake. I’m fighting for my life, and I do have some serious concerns about my defense,” Jayne said to the court.
- Jayne is facing nine felony charges, including aggravated murder. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
- Sgt. Hooser was killed after being hit by a semi truck on I-15 last year during a stop just after 6 a.m. Two others—another law officer and a woman who was reportedly being held in the truck—jumped out of the way and survived.
- After the officer was hit, Jayne allegedly fled, stole more vehicles, and was caught later that morning near Vernal, Utah.
What’s next: The judge set another hearing for June 11 to see if Jayne’s issues with his defense can be fixed before the next round of preliminary hearings scheduled for June 30 and July 1, according to the Daily Herald.
