A truck hauling an oversized load crashed into the Ohio River in Wellsburg, West Virginia, leaving the driver dead on Friday, July 18.
What happened: The crash took place shortly after 9 a.m. on 10th Street. The truck came off Washington Pike, sped across 10th Street, and went straight into the river.
- Video from the scene showed the 18-wheeler moving fast before it ended up fully submerged.
- Rescue teams from multiple agencies, including dive and swift water crews, arrived around 9:30 a.m.
- Divers recovered the driver, who did not survive, from inside the cab.
Brooke County Emergency Management, fire departments, and ambulance crews all responded. "We had a large truck come off of Washington Pike. I don't know what happened with the vehicle, but he came all the way across 10th Street and came down to the into the river. The truck was fully submerged in the water," said county EMA Director Greg Moore, according to WTOV9.
The identity of the truck driver has not yet been released. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
