A tractor-trailer driver has been charged following a crash that killed 45 cattle early morning on October 6 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.

The crash: It unfolded around 4:20 a.m. when Shawn E. Alford, 59, left northbound I-81, striking a guardrail before his vehicle overturned.

Alford, who was unharmed, was charged with reckless driving.
The collision tragically resulted in the deaths of 32 cows, with 10 more subsequently euthanized due to their injuries.
An additional three cows lost their lives in separate incidents near the crash site.

Local response: In an impressive show of community support, 25 local farmers rushed to the scene to help corral loose cattle, according to NVDaily.

Impact: The incident shut down both directions of I-81 for hours, with traffic diverted into nearby Strasburg. The interstate lanes were reopened by mid-afternoon.
