Tractor trailer crash triggers massive 18-vehicle pile-up on I-95

Late Thursday night, a major pile-up involving a tractor trailer and nearly 20 vehicles happened on I-95 at Ives Dairy Road in Miami-Dade County.

The crash: It happened just before 11:30 p.m. on August 28, when traffic was heavy. Florida Highway Patrol says a southbound tractor trailer did not slow down and slammed into vehicles stopped ahead. This started a chain reaction crash.

  • At least 18 vehicles were involved in the wreck.
  • 29 people were hurt, including three kids.
  • Most of the injured were taken to area hospitals. One adult was reported to have more serious injuries.

Response: Emergency crews worked through the night to clear the scene and help the injured. Traffic was diverted off the interstate due to a fuel spill and debris from the crash.

  • I-95 southbound was closed for about seven hours and reopened at 6 a.m. Friday, according to WSVN 7News.
  • No new updates were given on Friday about the condition of those hurt.

Florida Highway Patrol said the truck driver will be facing charges. Details on those charges have not yet been made public.
