Texas truckers rally against rising insurance costs due to lawsuits

The Texas Trucking Association (TXTA) is gearing up to push for major changes in the state's handling of lawsuits. This effort comes as lawsuit abuse ranks third on the list of trucking industry worries for 2024.

Big concern: The cost of insurance is rising, and many blame the increase on rampant lawsuit practices across the state. Dana C. Moore, TXTA's vice president of policy and governmental relations, points out billboards with lawyers promising to "fight" as evidence of the problem.

  • Insurance companies cite the lawsuit environment, particularly in Texas, as the primary reason for higher premiums.
  • Certain areas, like Harris County and the Rio Grande Valley, are known for large verdicts against trucking companies, according to Rio Grande Guardian.

Action plan: TXTA has teamed up with Texans for Lawsuit Reform and other associations to form the Lone Star Economic Alliance, aiming to address these issues.

Upcoming legislative sessions will see these groups focusing on reform to ease the pressure on Texas truckers. The next legislative meeting is set for January 2025.
