A fiery crash on June 11, 2023, led to a collapse of part of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia when a tanker truck lost control and overturned.
What happened: The crash occurred at 6:17 a.m. as driver Nathaniel Moody traveled on an exit ramp at around 44–54 mph. This speed was above the posted limit. The tanker struck a wall and overturned, causing a massive fire and part of I-95 to collapse.
- Nathaniel Moody, who was 53, tragically died in the accident.
- The tanker's contents, 8,500 gallons of gasoline, spread quickly due to a manhole cover not being secured properly.
Investigation findings: The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) concluded the driver’s speed and inattention, possibly due to fatigue, were key causes.
Recommendations: The NTSB suggested motor carriers implement strong fatigue management programs to avoid future incidents. They also highlighted the absence of an electronic stability control system in the truck, which could have prevented the rollover according to the NTSB report.
Permanent northbound lanes of I-95 were fully reopened in May 2024 after repairs. The community continues to rebuild after the impact of this incident.
