Truckers traveling through Rapid City had a surprise Wednesday, September 18th at the new Tilford Port of Entry. Officers from the South Dakota Highway Patrol held a trucker appreciation event to mark the opening of the new inspection facility.
What happened: From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., truckers were treated to burgers, hot dogs, and sides while getting tours of the new facility. The appreciation day offered a break from the road and a look at the new technology and features.
- The new facility includes an inspection bay that allows year-round inspections, avoiding delays due to weather conditions.
- Inside waiting areas provide truckers shelter from the elements while their rigs are inspected.
"The big difference is this bay behind us. Now we can do inspections all year-round," said Brian Stenbeck, a port-of-entry inspector. This is especially important in places with harsh weather, like South Dakota.
Dozens of truckers from across the country attended the event, picking up some swag and enjoying the chance to relax and connect with fellow drivers.
This new facility is designed to make inspections smoother and quicker, ensuring truckers can keep moving with minimal downtime. The event lasted several hours, allowing plenty of time for all attendees to participate according to KOTA News.
