On Thursday, October 23, a tragic accident happened on Route 80 West in Frelinghuysen Township, New Jersey. Ethan Schultz, a 20-year-old service technician from Pennsylvania, was struck and killed while working on a disabled Freightliner on the shoulder of the highway.
What happened: Around 6:37 a.m., Schultz pulled up to help a truck that had broken down. He was on the driver’s side when an unknown white commercial vehicle hit him and drove off without stopping, according to Daily Voice.
- Schultz died at the scene before emergency teams could help.
- The truck that struck him did not stay and is still being searched for by state police.
- The crash is under investigation, and no arrests have been made.
After this incident, TravelCenters of America (TA) put roadside assistance on hold to review safety procedures for their workers. TA says they will still do maintenance at truck stops, rest areas, and other off-road spots, but highway calls are paused for now while the company takes a closer look at keeping service teams safe.
