Semi truck hauling batteries overturns, causing major fire in LA

A semi-truck hauling six large lithium-ion batteries overturned on Thursday in San Pedro, California, causing a major fire.

The details: The accident happened just before noon on North Seaside Avenue. The batteries exploded, setting off a fire.

Road closures: The 47 Freeway and Vincent Thomas Bridge are both closed. The bridge may remain shut for up to 48 hours.

  • Traffic backups are reported in the area.
  • The fire has closed several port terminals, disrupting operations.

Firefighters took a defensive stance, letting the batteries burn out due to water runoff concerns, explained LAFD Capt. Adam Van Gergen.

Mayor's response: Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass praised firefighters for keeping the community safe. "We've been in touch with port and Caltrans officials to resolve the issue quickly," she stated.

What to expect: According to ABC 7 News, the fire may take another day to extinguish.

Thankfully, there are no reports of injuries. Cleanup and investigation are ongoing.
