Police kick off Operation Safe Driver Week with early truck stops

Police in Ontario started pulling over commercial vehicles a few days early ahead of this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week. The blitz by law enforcement is set for July 13-19, 2025 across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

What’s happening: During the safety week, officers will be looking out for reckless, careless, or dangerous driving. That means more eyes on both truckers and passenger car drivers. If you get stopped for unsafe driving, you could be looking at a ticket or a warning.

  • Canadian officers already placed several trucks out-of-service, mostly for equipment problems like faulty brakes or uncovered loads.
  • One truck was taken off the road on July 11, after police found a brake assembly not working and another brake out of adjustment. The load also wasn’t properly covered.

The focus: This year, the main push is on stopping reckless or careless driving — that’s things like speeding, following too close, not paying attention, or any driving that could cause harm.

  • Last year, more than 11,000 vehicles were stopped and a good number of warnings and tickets went out to both truck drivers and passenger vehicle drivers.

Along with tickets, the week includes safety education for drivers. CVSA is offering videos and other resources to help everyone stay safer, according to CVSA.
