Semi truck explosion shuts down I-65, no injuries reported

Interstate 65 in northwest Indiana was shut down Monday afternoon after a semi truck exploded near exit 230. The highway remains closed with concerns over road safety lingering into the night of April 21, 2025.

The details: The truck was transporting aerosol spray paint, which intensified the blaze. Ongoing small explosions have kept the scene hazardous. Fortunately, the truck driver emerged unscathed from the dramatic fire.

  • Authorities have closed I-65 between exit 230 and exit 240, warning drivers to find alternate routes as cleanup continues.
  • The Indiana State Police will escort vehicles once it is deemed safe, but have not provided a reopening time.

Big picture: The explosions and resulting fire have severely damaged the roadway surface, warranting extensive repairs before any traffic can resume.

The cause of the initial explosion remains under investigation. As of now, no injuries have been reported, and emergency crews work diligently to manage the aftermath.
