A semi truck crashed down a steep embankment on Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado early Monday, November 3. The driver, a 23-year-old from New York, lost his life at the scene.
What happened: Colorado State Patrol said the 2020 Freightliner was loaded with canned drinks and traveling south on Highway 160 when it hit a barrier and then broke through a guardrail near mile marker 161. The crash happened around 8:21 a.m.
- Troopers believe the truck’s brakes failed going down the pass. Smoke was seen coming from the brakes before the wreck.
- The driver did not use a runaway truck ramp located about 1.5 miles before the crash.
- The crash was so severe the trailer broke open, and cargo spilled down the embankment.
Cleanup: A Colorado Department of Transportation plow was called to help clear debris from the highway.
The incident is under investigation by Colorado State Patrol.
