Semi loses brakes on I-70, major crash shuts down highway

A major wreck on I-70 in the Colorado mountains shut down the highway after a semi lost its brakes and hit another truck on Wednesday, June 4.

What happened: The first semi truck was westbound near Silverthorne when the brakes failed. It collided with a second semi, and both trucks crossed into oncoming traffic. One of the semis landed on top of a Toyota RAV4, and the car ended up smashing all the way through the trailer before stopping at the guardrail.

  • The RAV4 driver got out with just minor injuries.
  • The second semi's driver also had minor injuries, but their passenger was badly hurt with life-threatening injuries.
  • The truck driver who lost brakes was cited for careless driving causing bodily injury.

Cleanup: Crews spent hours dealing with broken glass and about 1,000 feet of destroyed guardrail. It took most of the night to get everything cleared, according to 9NEWS.

If anyone saw the crash and hasn't talked to investigators, authorities are asking them to call dispatch at 970-249-4392.
