A major wreck on I-70 in the Colorado mountains shut down the highway after a semi lost its brakes and hit another truck on Wednesday, June 4.
What happened: The first semi truck was westbound near Silverthorne when the brakes failed. It collided with a second semi, and both trucks crossed into oncoming traffic. One of the semis landed on top of a Toyota RAV4, and the car ended up smashing all the way through the trailer before stopping at the guardrail.
- The RAV4 driver got out with just minor injuries.
- The second semi's driver also had minor injuries, but their passenger was badly hurt with life-threatening injuries.
- The truck driver who lost brakes was cited for careless driving causing bodily injury.
Cleanup: Crews spent hours dealing with broken glass and about 1,000 feet of destroyed guardrail. It took most of the night to get everything cleared, according to 9NEWS.
