Semi hauling band gear struck by train near big event

A semi hauling band equipment for Vandegrift High School was hit by a train in San Antonio, Texas, around 2:40 p.m. on Monday, November 3, just before a big state marching competition.

What happened: The truck was less than a mile from the Alamodome when it got stuck on the tracks at Carolina Street and Hoefgen Avenue. The driver and passenger were able to get out safely before the train struck the cab.

  • No students were inside or saw the crash. The band members were already at the Alamodome getting ready for their performance.
  • The crash hit the truck hard, but most of the musical instruments made it through without major damage. The cab of the truck took most of the hit.
  • Other schools at the contest offered to lend their instruments so the Vandegrift band could still perform.

The schedule: The contest organizers changed things around so the Vandegrift band could go last that night at 9:15 p.m., according to KENS 5.

The main damage was to the tractor cab, and thankfully, no one was hurt in the crash.
