Traffic on I-83 in York County, Pennsylvania, was put at a standstill on the morning of Friday, August 1, after a tractor-trailer hauling frozen hot dogs wrecked between Exit 4 (Shrewsbury) and Exit 8 (Glen Rock).
The crash: The accident, which happened just after 9 a.m., involved a semi and two other vehicles. The truck’s load spilled over a thousand pounds of frozen hot dogs across the highway.
- Four people were sent to the hospital with injuries, but officials said none were life-threatening.
- Both northbound lanes and one southbound lane of I-83 were shut down so crews could clean up the mess and fix a damaged median.
PennDOT crews had to spread sand over the road after the hot dogs made the surface slick, leading to a bizarre and frustrating delay for drivers stuck in traffic. “We all came to a dead stop…and hot dogs all over the road,” one local told FOX43.
Some drivers said they waited 20–30 minutes just to get moving again, while others had to cancel plans or appointments. The sight of hot dogs scattered everywhere made for a memorable commute, according to FOX43.
The highway fully reopened around 2 p.m. The exact cause of the crash hasn’t been announced.
