Semi clips bucket truck, city worker suffers serious injuries

A city electrical worker in Gardner, Massachusetts was badly hurt on Monday afternoon, June 23, after falling out of a bucket truck when it was struck by a passing semi.

How it happened: The worker, Darrell Sweeney, was up in the bucket fixing a flashing traffic light at the intersection of Elm and Temple Streets. A semi truck tried to get by and clipped the raised bucket, causing the worker’s harness to break and throwing him to the ground.

  • Witnesses say the bucket got hit hard, leaving Sweeney to fall several feet to the roadway.
  • People nearby rushed to help, and first responders arrived quickly on the scene.

Aftermath: Sweeney suffered multiple broken bones but is expected to survive, according to Mayor Michael Nicholson. The mayor visited Sweeney in the hospital and thanked the medics for their fast help, reported WCVB.

Worth noting: No information is available yet about whether the semi truck driver will face any charges. Local officials said there was no police detail at the time of the accident.
