Runaway ramp upgrade on Highway 95 to boost safety

A runaway truck ramp on U.S. Highway 95 in Idaho is closed for safety improvements. The Idaho Transportation Department (IDT) began the repairs on October 15 and expects the project to last around three weeks.

What's happening: The ramp, located at the bottom of the Lewiston Grade, is undergoing repaving. IDT is adding up to 1600 feet of new gravel to enhance its effectiveness.

  • This is one of six ramps available for truckers navigating the descent.
  • The project costs are estimated at $385,000.

Impact: Southbound traffic will be funneled into a single lane during the repairs. Truckers are advised to use one of the other ramps if they encounter brake problems.

This upgrade reflects the importance of keeping critical safety mechanisms like runaway ramps in peak condition for those hauling freight long distances.
