U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized 339 pounds of cocaine at the Detroit port of entry on Tuesday, April 15. The truck carrying the drugs was on its way to Canada when stopped for a routine check.
What happened: Officers at the Ambassador Bridge conducted a physical inspection and found bricks of cocaine hidden in two duffel bags and four moving boxes.
- The driver, an Indian citizen, now faces federal charges.
- The truck and trailer were confiscated.
Official word: "Our ports of entry are not throughfares for illegal drugs," said Acting Port Director David Beculheimer. Director of Field Operations Marty C. Raybon added, "We work diligently to enable fair trade and stop those seeking illicit gain."
The operation is part of a broader drug interdiction effort. So far this fiscal year, CBP Field Operations in Michigan has seized over 1,500 pounds of cocaine, according to CBP. The investigation continues under the lead of ICE Homeland Security Investigations.
