Railroads team up to pull more freight off the highway

BNSF and CSX announced new intermodal rail services on August 22, 2025, aiming to move more freight off the highways and onto trains.

What's new: The partnership will launch direct rail routes between Southern California and Charlotte, North Carolina, as well as Jacksonville, Florida. There will also be a new service connecting Phoenix, Arizona, and Atlanta, Georgia.

  • These routes are designed to create a smoother handoff between the two railroads, allowing coast-to-coast service without as many stops or delays.
  • The companies say their goal is to give shippers more choices, so it's easier for customers to move goods across the U.S. without depending just on trucks.
  • They also plan to open up new direct international routes between the Port of New York and New Jersey, Norfolk, Virginia, and Kansas City.

Why it matters: Railroads are going after business that's usually done by truckers, especially for freight running long distances across the country.

Jon Gabriel at BNSF said, "This partnership shows how working together can bring more options and better service to customers." Drew Johnson at CSX said the new connections will make for "faster, more reliable service" between the West and East.

Further details about schedules and availability will come out soon, according to BNSF Railway.
