Quick-thinking truckers stop fire from reaching IndyCar race cars

A truck hauling IndyCar Series race cars caught fire on Sunday, July 20, on I-74 near mile marker 13 in Colona, Illinois.

What happened: The Colona Fire Department responded at 6:12 p.m. to a fire in the trailer's right rear tire area, which started to spread toward the cargo. Hazmat crews were also called out to handle concerns about on-board fuel containers for the race cars.

  • Firefighters managed to control the flames before they could seriously damage the cargo or cause a bigger problem.
  • The semi was carrying valuable IndyCar Series cars, but the team stopped the fire from reaching them.
  • No injuries were reported, according to local officials.
