Crews have started tearing down tollbooths on the Pennsylvania Turnpike as the state moves to a fully Open Road Tolling system. This change was announced on June 9, 2025, and drivers will see more demolition east of Reading and along the Northeast Extension through 2026.
How it works: Instead of stopping at booths, drivers will have tolls charged automatically as they pass under gantries at highway speeds. Payments can be made through E-ZPass or Toll By Plate—no slowing, no stopping.
- The mainline Turnpike will start using the new system in western PA in 2027.
- All traditional tollbooths are set to be gone statewide by the end of 2028.
- Pocono Interchange (Exit 95) already has its booths taken down.
What to watch for: As work continues, truckers should look out for road crews and new traffic patterns at those interchanges. All construction is expected to wrap up as each area switches to ORT.
The Turnpike Commission says this move will make things smoother and safer for all, especially those hauling freight day and night.
