Overturned cattle truck on Route 29 scatters dozens of cows

A truck carrying cattle overturned on the Route 29 South exit near Danville, Virginia, at around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 16th.

The crash: The truck rolled while heading toward Caswell County, North Carolina. The trailer was loaded with about 120 cows. After the crash, between 20 and 30 cows broke out and scattered. Several cows died in the wreck, but police have not said how many.

  • The truck driver, 34-year-old Kevin Hurt, was seriously injured and taken to the hospital.
  • The truck was owned by someone else and headed to South Carolina.

The roundup: Police, fire crews, cowboys, and others worked until nightfall to round up the cows. Drones were used to help find the missing animals.

  • By 7:48 p.m., only three cows were still missing.
  • The highway was cleared and reopened around 8:40 p.m.

The investigation: Officers say charges are pending against the driver for failure to maintain proper control. Danville Police are still looking into what caused the rollover, reported WSET.

The road was back open to traffic later that evening, but three cows are still lost as of the last update.
