A semi-trailer exploded in Rancho Haven, just north of Reno, Nevada, early Wednesday afternoon, August 13. The trailer, parked on private property, was being used for storage by the homeowner.
What happened: Around 1 p.m., the homeowner heard a loud boom that sounded like a cannon. When he checked outside, he found his trailer on fire, with the side blown out from the blast.
- The Washoe County Sheriff's Office and the local bomb squad responded quickly to the scene.
- Investigators say the fire started because oily rags had been left inside the trailer. In the afternoon heat, the oil on the rags heated up, causing them to catch fire and lead to the small explosion.
- Authorities say storing oil-soaked rags in sealed containers or spaces can be very dangerous, since trapped heat has nowhere to escape.
No injuries were reported, and officials say there is no threat to the public, according to mynews4.com.
