North Dakota drivers saw a new speed limit take effect on Friday, August 1, with most interstate sections now posted at 80 mph.
Key changes: The North Dakota Department of Transportation started making sign changes this week, but drivers can go 80 mph even before all signs are updated. Some areas, like near Dickinson, Grand Forks, Jamestown, Medora, and Valley City, will still have lower limits at 70 mph.
- The new law—passed as House Bill 1298—boosts rural interstate limits from 75 to 80 mph.
- Highway Patrol officers have been told to get stricter. Rather than allowing the old 5 mph over, they’ll now only allow 2 mph over before pulling drivers over, according to InForum.
- Fines are also higher, starting at $20 with added costs for higher speeds over the limit.
The last time the speed limit was raised was in 2003, when it went from 70 to 75 mph.
