Big changes are happening for drivers passing through the Green River Tunnel on I-80 in Wyoming. Since March 11, the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) put new width rules in place.
What's new: Vehicles traveling eastbound through the tunnel can't be wider than 8 feet 6 inches now. Before, they could be up to 10.5 feet wide.
- The changes come after paving work wrapped up. Drivers with larger loads have to reach out to the Wyoming Highway Patrol for detour options.
The reason: A crash involving 26 vehicles in the westbound tunnel on February 14 led to these updates. Sadly, three people lost their lives in the fiery incident, and the area is still under cleanup.
- WYDOT has teamed up with Clean Harbors, a service company, to handle cleanup and disposal efforts in the damaged tunnel section.
Looking ahead: The westbound tunnel reopening is a priority, but there's no exact timeline yet as the operation remains complex.
Drivers are asked to stay alert and be cautious around cleanup crews in the area.
