New 2025 trucking rules focus on brake and license updates

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has rolled out its updated Out-of-Service Criteria for 2025. These updates are now effective as of April 1.

What's new: This year, there are over a dozen changes that mainly impact driver requirements and brake violations.

  • Clarity was added regarding Canada's Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate concerning operator licenses.
  • Accompanying drivers of those with commercial learner’s permits can't be unauthorized for any reason.
  • New criteria include out-of-service conditions for inoperative brakes due to specific issues like unplugged cables.
  • The requirements for air brake hose and tubing were updated, removing some previous restrictions.

Why it matters: Inspectors use these criteria to assess the safety of trucks and drivers on the road. It's crucial for trucking companies to stay updated with these criteria to avoid being placed out-of-service.

**The brake system:** A focus this year is on ensuring brake systems operate properly, with new rules on air brake hose and tubing. Inoperative brakes due to a disconnected service gladhand now result in out-of-service conditions, according to the CVSA's updated document.

Looking ahead: These changes are incorporated into inspection training materials and procedures, signifying a continued emphasis on safety and compliance.

The 2025 criteria updates emphasize safety by ensuring that necessary vehicle components like brakes and licensing are up to standard.
