Major crash with semi trucks snarls I-459 traffic for hours

A significant crash involving ten vehicles, including two semi-trucks, brought chaos to Interstate 459 in Jefferson County, Alabama, on October 16th.

The crash: It happened around 3 p.m. when a southbound semi-truck collided with two vehicles, causing it to veer into the median and into the northbound lanes, striking another 18-wheeler. The driver of the first truck needed extraction from the cab.

  • This driver was transported to a hospital, though thankfully, his condition is stable.
  • Three other individuals sustained minor injuries; only one required hospital care.

Clean-up crew: Diesel spill from the accident necessitated an extensive cleaning effort, leading to the closure of the road for several hours, reported WBRC.

Impact: Traffic on I-459 remained at a standstill for almost six hours before reopening just before 9 p.m.
