On June 28, a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 20 near Terrell, Texas, killed five people and involved three big rigs and four cars. The crash happened in a construction zone when traffic had slowed down.
The details: Authorities say 27-year-old truck driver Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni was hauling U.S. mail when he fell asleep behind the wheel. He did not brake and drove straight into the line of stopped vehicles.
- The crash led to the deaths of four family members: Billy McKellar, 79; Zabar McKellar, 52; Krishaun McKellar, 45; and Kason McKellar, 16, all from Texas. Another victim, Nicole Gregory, 49, was also killed.
- In total, the crash involved seven vehicles, including three 18-wheelers.
- The mail-hauling truck was working for Hope Trans, a company that subcontracts postal routes.
Investigations and company issues: Former Hope Trans drivers have come forward, saying the company pushed them to drive beyond legal hours and even falsified logbooks and other paperwork.
- Investigators found that the truck involved had fake registration documents.
- This led to an official with Hope Trans getting indicted for felony forgery, though their name hasn't been released yet.
- The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are both investigating, but Hope Trans is still running interstate loads as of now.
Legal updates: On August 1, Gonzalez-Companioni was indicted on five counts of manslaughter and four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He remains in jail on $2.25 million bond, with a hearing set for August 11, according to WFAA News.
