Loose semi truck tire tragically claims SCDOT worker's life

Tragedy struck in Dorchester County, South Carolina, when a South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) worker was killed by a semi truck tire on the morning of February 18, 2025.

What happened: Jerad Devin Rose, 24, was on the shoulder of US 15 near St. George when a tire from a passing semi truck came loose, hitting him and resulting in his death.

  • The incident occurred around 9 a.m. and is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
  • Rose had started his career as a surveyor with the SCDOT in Dorchester County just a year prior.

The response: South Carolina Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling Rose's death a significant tragedy and recognizing the dangers faced by frontline workers.

He urged the community to remember Rose's sacrifice and keep his family in their thoughts, reported SCDOT.

Looking ahead: A moment of silence was observed by SCDOT employees, and Rose will be honored at the annual workers memorial service in April.
