Traffic is set to move again on Interstate 40 near the NC/TN border after a five-month shutdown. The highway was closed due to Hurricane Helene's destruction, but it's reopening with some unique measures.
What's new: Starting Saturday, March 1, drivers will find a reduced speed limit of 35 mph and a special 9-inch concrete curb dividing lanes. There will also be an emergency-only lane on the eastbound side and no room for wide loads.
- Semi-trucks can travel the 12-mile stretch from Cold Springs Creek Road in NC to Big Creek Road in TN.
- Drivers are advised to take alternate routes like I-26 from Asheville to Kingsport, TN, then I-81 South to I-40, especially when carrying wide loads.
Caution: With the narrowed lanes and reduced speed limit, delays are expected, particularly on busy travel days like weekends and holidays.
The plans for this temporary reopening were laid out after hurricane damage washed away a significant portion of the road. Crews have been hard at work stabilizing the westbound lanes and creating the current single-lane setup, reported Sandhills Sentinel.
Looking ahead: Even though trucks can continue using I-40, it's important to note that exits beyond Exit 20 might not be feasible, despite possibly being directed by GPS. The highway's permanent fixes are ongoing, ensuring a smoother passage in the future.
