On October 31, 2025, Illinois lawmakers passed a big transit bill that will raise tolls for commercial vehicles traveling on the Illinois Tollway.
The details: The new plan—part of Senate Bill 2111—boosts truck tolls by 30% starting January 1, 2027. Passenger car tolls will also jump by 45 cents. Officials say the changes will bring the state an extra $1 billion every year for transportation projects.
- Lawmakers also approved automatic toll increases for both cars and trucks every two years, starting in 2029.
- The bill creates a new agency, the Northern Illinois Transit Authority, to take over from the old Regional Transportation Authority.
- It will also move $200 million from road funding to public transit projects, reported the legislation.
Governor JB Pritzker has said the bill avoids broad new taxes and lets individual transit agencies make their own choices on rates and spending.
If signed into law, truckers will see the higher toll rates roll out in early 2027.
