After being closed for more than a week from a rockslide and flooding, I-40 at the North Carolina and Tennessee border reopened one lane each way on June 27, officials said.
The latest: Crews worked nonstop to clear debris in four separate spots and fix ramps near the Waterville exit. The repairs were finished about a week ahead of what was expected.
- Flood waters and rocks forced the interstate shut on June 18, with a number of cars partially underwater.
- No injuries were reported during the slide and flooding.
By the numbers: The partial reopening includes one lane open in each direction, and drivers should expect lower speed limits as repairs continue.
- Oversized loads are still not allowed because of previous repairs from Hurricane Helene last year, not the current rockslide.
- Crews will stay on scene to keep working, so anyone passing through should watch for workers.
No word yet on when the highway will fully reopen to normal traffic.
